Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin passed away today, Wednesday, at the age of 96, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
The Chinese agency stated that Jiang died of leukemia and the failure of many organs, noting that he died in Shanghai.
China, led by Jiang, succeeded in reintegrating the country into the international community, by restoring sovereignty over Hong Kong and joining the World Trade Organization.
Jiang was one of the key figures in China's history in recent decades, leading the country in a period that saw China open up on a large scale and record great economic growth.
